Inland Spain is
becoming increasingly attractive to the person looking for a little solitude
and the true Spanish way of life. Many people visiting the Costa
Blanca try to take advantage of travelling inland for a few days to enjoy a
break from the bustling night life and packed beaches. Travelling
inland has improved dramatically in the last few years and well made roads
guide you inland - but don't be surprised to find that maps are not able to
keep up to date with the changes. Appreciate the change in scenery and
vegetation and the warmth of the farming communities. Make your way
towards the mountains to cool down on those summer days which are just too
hot for tanning.

Raspay (near Pinoso) is about 50 minutes
inland from Torrevieja, on the Murcia/Alicante border. Alicante airport and
beaches are also 45 minutes. There
are no crowds, no pollution, no crime, no traffic. Combined with
low-cost daily living and beautiful scenery this is a good place to be!
With a choice of airports, Alicante or Murcia, it's easy to get to.
Many people are of the impression
that inland Spain is barren. On the contrary, you will be pleasantly
surprised at the lush growth in the vineyards, and the forests on the side
of the mountains. Indeed, there is a huge National Park on Saddleback
mountain (called so because it is the shape of a saddle, complete with
pommel) but the Spanish keep it a secret, in case thousands of tourists
flock to the area and spoil it! Neither do they want people
disturbing the wild boar, eagles, and other forms of wildlife that have
happily been living side by side for many hundreds of years.
There are several golf courses within
easy reach, and we're only 25km. from the spa town of Fortuna, with its hot
spring waters, beautiful swimming pools, massage centre, steam rooms and
water therapy centre. There are fiestas year
round, but most take place at weekends from May to September in the
surrounding villages and other small towns. Refreshments are often
free, and people come from miles around to join the parades and dance until
dawn.
Most villages in this area have
been built in the valleys, surrounded by mountains. This forms a natural sun
trap but the sun may take a little longer to burn off the early
morning mist, and the climate is a little cooler and less humid than on the
coast, but with the added advantage of the clean, healthy mountain air,
untouched by human pollution. It is an extremely healthy
environment to live in, and you find that you sleep much better too.....
